![]() TOL-O-MATIC has announced its new Absolute Position Feedback (APF) technology, the first fully-integrated linear actuator sensor that eliminates the need for homing routines. APF-equipped TOL-O-MATIC actuators provide analog feedback to the controller or PLC to determine actual load position. Work point variances can also be accommodated throughout the cycle, eliminating stoppage for manual set-ups. Systems with APF provide position feedback as soon as power is applied, allowing immediate resumption from shutdowns, resets and power losses. The APF option is currently available for TOL-O-MATIC BC3 pneumatic and B3S electric series actuators, and unlike fixed length sensors, can be ordered in incremental stroke lengths from 2 to 156 inches. “APF is fully integrated within the actuator body, eliminating the need for complex mounting and also reducing the chance of damage to the transducer, said Michael Dornfeld, TOL-O-MATIC Project Engineer. “The technology utilizes a non-contact, linear displacement transducer that offers high life expectancy, high speed, high linearity and repeatability compared to conventional linear potentiometers. Dornfeld added that because the APF magnetostrictive transducer measures position directly, effects of screw/nut backlash can be eliminated from position feedback information. In pneumatic applications using BC3-series actuators, APF can eliminate the need for hard-wired event triggers, and events can be easily programmed to a PLC without having to manually add or adjust switches. An analog signal of 0 to +10Vdc or 10 to +10 Vdc can be selected (based on control device) to make full use of the controller’s analog to digital conversion capabilities. TOL-O-MATIC’s APF technology opens the door to greater productivity in a number of applications that demand load position location at operation start-up, or high performance/high volume production, including valve positioning, winding, measurement, stacking, inspection machinery, X-Y positioning set-up, load sensing and assembly machinery. More information and performance data for BC3 pneumatic and B3S electric actuators equipped with the APF option can be found at www.tolomatic.com/APF, or by calling 1-800-328-2174. ![]() MTS Sensors introduces new IP67 housing options for the C-Series modular linear-position sensor. The IP67 housing is ideal for applications subjected to dust, moisture and other environmental conditions that can interfere with operation. Particularly well suited for small- to mid-volume applications where an embedded design using the C-Series core sensor may not be feasible, the C-Series housing options allow the sensor to be safely and securely installed externally onto a product with limited design modifications for even the most robust applications. The Temposonics C-Series sensor incorporates the latest in magnetostrictive sensor technology to produce the world's smallest magnetostrictive position sensor. Designed for use in OEM products, such as medical devices, small cutting/fastening/forming tools, and various consumer products, the C-Series sensor electronics fit completely inside a 36 mm (1.4 in) by 23 mm (0.91 in) cylindrical housing package, such as the new IP67 housing option from MTS. "The compact size and new housing options provide a greater range of installation choices, making the C-Series an ideal choice to replace older technology sensors, such as linear potentiometers and LVDTs," said Jesse Russell, Product Marketing Manager, MTS Sensors Division. "While many high-volume OEMs will design the C-Series into their application housings, the availability of housing options, such as the new IP67 option, makes the C-Series a more viable option for many small- to mid-volume applications for which redesign for embedded installations may otherwise be too costly." The C-Series Core sensor has a 0 to 5Vdc or PWM output available, and can be powered with a standard 5-volt power supply. The modular architecture allows the addition of a second electronics board that configures the sensor to operate using 12-volt power and also adds additional protection circuitry for EMI immunity. The optional board was designed to optimize the C-Series sensor performance in many mobile machine applications, including agricultural, marine and construction equipment as well as other applications with 12-volt supplies. For more information about the C-Series sensor and its housing options, contact Jesse Russell, MTS Sensors Division, at 919-677-2314, jesse.russell@mts.com or via the Web at www.mtssensors.com.

![]() SCHUNK Inc. introduces a new series of 4-finger centric grippers known as PZV. Currently, 2- and 3-finger grippers cover most industrial and automation handling tasks. They offer high positioning accuracy when gripping coplanar cylindrical work pieces. 4-finger grippers are required if cylindrical work pieces are palletized in a grid. In the case of a 3-finger gripper, however, at least one of the fingers interferes with a neighboring component. The PZV takes advantage of the given space at the quadrants of the work pieces with its four fingers. The PZV gripper is ideal for these applications. To make the PZV versatile during other applications, you can use it as a parallel gripper for clamping different parts by mounting two different sets of fingers. This eliminates the need to change tooling, while also reducing setup time. The PZV is available in 4 sizes and achieves grip forces from 580 N (130 lbf) to 7,100 N (1,600 lbf). With strokes ranging from 6 mm to 25 mm per finger, the PZV has the capability to cover a large range of work pieces. The PZV is built with proven technology from the 2-finger PGN-plus and 3-finger PZN-plus grippers using the serrated jaw design. The serrated jaw design and the proven wedge hook system gives these grippers a higher moment capacity, thereby allowing higher accelerations and heavier work piece weight. SCHUNK has also provided mounting for inductive proximity sensors with fully adjustable targets and integrated mounting of magnetic switches. ![]() SCHUNK Inc. introduces a new series of servo-electric grippers, EGN 100, a 2-finger parallel type and EZN 64 of the 3-finger centric type. The basic principle of these two servo grippers comes from their proven pneumatic counterparts PGN+100 and PZN+64. Due to the integrated servomotor and encoder for position feedback, the grippers can be actuated in either a force or positioning mode and allows for adjustment of the gripping force, position or speed. The EGN & EZN have an external controller that is supplied with 24V DC and can be controlled by a CAN-bus or RS 485 communication interface. This controller also has a digital control input making it easy to integrate it to an existing application without the CAN-bus or RS 485 communication capability capabilities. The EGN 100 gives a stroke range of up to 20mm and a grip force of up to 600 N (135 lbf). The EZN 64 has a stroke of up to 12mm and a grip force of 500 N (112 lbf). With the capabilities of the EGN & EZN servo grippers you can improve a wide range of processes. The position feedback of the encoder allows you to sort parts while transporting them instead of having a separate measuring operation determining the part size. Typically on robotic applications, the end effector is the only component that requires a pneumatic supply and valve to actuate it. The EGN or EZN will eliminate the need for air in these applications. The EGN & EZN is a great addition to the growing electric product offering of SCHUNK. ![]() AMHERST, NH, USA - ControlAir Inc. announces the introduction of the Type 5500 Multi-station , Digital-to-Pneumatic Pressure Regulator with DeviceNetTM. This unique multi-station manifold uses a common air supply to provide electronic proportional control of output pressure from any combination of 4, 6 or 8 station units through the use of a DeviceNetTM communication protocol. An 8-bit digital signal describing the required output pressure for each electronic regulator is sent by DeviceNetTM to the Type 5500 node. The Type 5500 converts the digital signal into the appropriate 4-20mA signal that is sent to each corresponding I/P transducer which adjusts output pressure to the desired setting. Each manifold requires only one power cord and one fieldbus connection for up to 8 pressure outputs from one node. This simplified system greatly reduces set up time and wiring costs associated with other analog I/P Transducers. An optional pressure sensor feeds back a diagnostic signal by DeviceNetTM to the controller, which then monitors pressure output from each I/P. Individual pneumatic shutoff valves allow adding, changing or removing electronic pressure regulators without shutting off the main air supply. It also allows servicing one station while the others remain in operation. In addition to delivering low hysteresis and excellent repeatability, the Type 5500 has RFI/EMI Effect protection. Output ranges include 3-15 psig, 3-27 psig, 6-30 psig, 2-60 psig and 3-120 psig. Maximum supply pressure is 150 psig. Temperature limits range from -20 F to 150 F. Built-in volume boosters provide flow capacity of up to 20 scfm. Mounting is available as wall or DIN Rail. ![]() The new Rexroth MS01 pneumatic part present sensing system offers precise measuring accuracy up to 0.01mm. Automatic feeding and processing of work pieces quite often relies on exact positioning of the parts. Rexroth has developed a pneumatic modular system to monitor part presence that fulfills the strictest user demands in terms of technology, user-friendliness, and size. The new compact system controls the presence, position, shape, and dimensions of test objects. The object is scanned using an air jet from a sensor nozzle. Simultaneous evaluation of the previously defined pressure sends an output to the user in the form of electrical signals. These signals are processed by the machine control system and displayed on the module. The control system either releases the work piece for processing or stops the process. This contributes immensely to improving the quality of the test object, but it also avoids errors, thus saving time and money. This function opens up a wide variety of application possibilities for almost any industry, such as the machine tool or automotive. The block solution with the proven CD01 valve system can be integrated into any machine control system. Up to 6 test modules can be combined in the system solution. In addition to this, the technical design of the system makes it insensitive to primary pressure fluctuations. In addition to all these advantages, this system solution requires only minimum effort for assembly and installation. Pneumatic part present sensing from Rexroth also stands out due to its extremely precise measuring accuracy of up to 0.01 mm. The MS01 is also equipped with an integrated air blowing function to prevent the measured results from being incorrectly influenced by contaminants such as shavings or coolant. Regular surface cleaning is guaranteed with this function. The air blowing function can be regulated to keep compressed air consumption to a minimum, making the MS01 much more efficient than most other pneumatic systems available. A combination of optical and mechanical system components also allows you to quickly and easily set the correct gap limit between the work piece and the sensor nozzle. ![]() Servo-Pneumatic Control System Trumbull, CT Enfield Technologies is proud to announce the introduction of our LS high-speed, advanced servo-pneumatic control system that helps automation designers control position, pressure, force, flow or velocity in either open- or closed-loop applications. The LS System is compromised of a dedicated device controller and a 5-ported, 3-position, closed-center directional valve for a unique yet simple and easy-to-use package. The systems' multiple feedback design gives the designer more control over their applications. The device controller requires a minimum 12Vdc at 25 Watts or 1.0 Amp power source, and accepts a 4-20 mA, 0-10 Vdc or 10Vdc command signal input from a variety of sources including PLCs and computers. Its convergent controller circuitry provides real-time command and feedback signal monitoring with a <100 ?second response time. It has active valve current feedback, which monitors the linear force motor's position and immediately corrects external disturbances at the valve before the system sees them. It is rated for operating temperatures from 13OF to +187OF (-25OC to +85OC). Optional sensor signal conditioners are available. The sensor signal conditioner provides amplification and linearization for either two individual or one differential low voltage level pressure or force sensors. For example, with differential pressure measurement an additional feedback path can be provided for those applications requiring more stability under varying load conditions. The command signal ramp conditioner modifies the characteristics of the command signal by changing the up and down slopes of the command signal for gradually opening and closing of the servo-valve. This allows the system to be tuned to avoid overshoot, and it is ideal for helping conserve energy (electricity and compressed air) by matching the servo-pneumatic control system to the mechanical system dynamics. The servo-pneumatic valve uses a directly coupled linear force motor and lapped-spool-and- sleeve construction for fast, smooth, quiet, stiction-free operation. This patented design provides infinitely variable and truly linear proportionality with almost zero hysteresis. The valve's response time from closed-center to fully open in either direction is 2.5 milliseconds, and it consumes less than 1 Amp to complete this operation. The valve is available in three sizes 10- 32 UNF, 1/8" NPT and 1/4" NPT with a flow capacity up to 46 SCFM (985 Nl/m). The valves are capable of controlling pneumatic actuators up to 5" (125mm) bore. The LS System is rated for use with clean, dry, non-lubricated air or inert gases up from 28" Hg vacuum to 150 PSI (10bar), and ambient temperatures from 10OF to +115OF (-23OC to +46OC). The valve receives it command signal through a 3-pin pico M8 female, 24AWG cable. While the system is designed for proportional pneumatic control it can be used in speed applications with a total cycle time of 5ms for a complete open and close of one port. That's 4 to 7 times faster then the typical solenoid operated valve. Its trapezoidal command curve eliminates the end of stroke shock typically associated with high-speed bang-bang applications. The LS System is being used in a wide variety of applications and is well suited for industrial automation, product testing and animation. ![]() Setting a productive pace The HSP High-Speed Picker from Festo quickly reins in costs for handling and assembly technology. With high cycle rates and intelligent stroke adjustment, the new Pick & Place shortens production times and improves economic efficiency. A handling module steps on the gas: At clock frequencies ranging from 0.6 to 1 second, the high-speed picker combines horizontal travel and vertical stroke, including a rest position, into a single unit. The link-rod driven Pick & Place unit is thus the fastest pneumatic handling module available from the market. Increased output rates of up to 100 parts per minute and 20 % shorter cycle times make it a specialist for handling small parts with typical work piece loads of less than 100 grams. Whether it's used for simple insertion and removal tasks at rotary indexing table, or for sorting tasks at transfer systems - thanks to its compact design, the High-Speed picker keeps the pace even in the tightest of spaces. A repetition accuracy of 0.02 mm in the end-positions guarantees that precision is maintained, even at extreme tempos. Flexible application The design of the new handling module allows for more freedom of movement. In contrast to most curve-driven systems, the High-Speed Picker is not constructed for rigid movement kinetics. Only the centre bit of the three-part link is fixed on the aluminium basic profile. Both of the side bits can be moved individually and the strokes along the Y-axis can be set independently of each other. An additional stroke adjustment along the Z-axis enables the independent height offset between Pick & Place Positions. Level differences between rotary indexing tables and transfer systems can thus be quickly and easily bypassed. Faster start with plug and work The HSP also gets off to a quick start when it comes to system design, commissioning and assembly: Delivered preassembled and ready to install - with an appropriate installation package if required - it eliminates the need to assemble axes, adapter plates and installation components. The High-Speed Picker at a glance: Link-driven, flexible handling Sizes of 12, 16 and 25 mm Y strokes from 52 to 170 mm Z strokes from 15 to 100 mm

![]() Littleton, Colorado, USA - April 2004. Norgren, the motion and fluid control specialists, has extended its range of actuator solutions with the launch of its new multi position airless cylinder. With precision at the heart of the design, the new electric actuator complements Norgren's existing range of pneumatic cylinders, thus allowing even more customers to benefit from the competitive advantage that Norgren builds into its engineering solutions. With the capability to move loads up to 22 pounds (11Kg) the multi position airless cylinder operates at very high speeds and is fully programmable to deliver high stroke accuracies. This makes the actuator ideal for inclusion in applications that require high speeds combined with multiple position operation such as high speed insertion equipment in the packaging and semiconductor manufacturing sector, automatic test/inspection, printing and medical industries. Featuring the capability to store multiple stroke end points each with its own defined speed, acceleration and force parameters, the positions can be programmed anywhere in the stroke range. The system can be run in different modes: using a programmable controller's I/O modules or from an optional fieldbus connection. For set-up and tests the multi position airless cylinder may automatically run a stored program. This makes the device ideal for a large machine with PLCs, industrial computers and for smaller machines with limited I/O capability. The airless cylinder requires one electrical connection to operate and can be disabled from the supply when not running thus conserving energy. Featuring no mechanical connection between the moving mass and the stationary mass the airless cylinder features extremely long life and product reliability. The movement is produced by the interaction of two magnetic fields, one field from permanent magnets in the slider and the second field produced by electric current in the motor windings located in the stator. Unlike rotary motors either motor part can move if the other part is held fixed. The programming of the cylinder is straightforward and intuitive. Desired positions are entered using a laptop or by 'teaching' the unit (moving it by hand and remembering the position). Guiding system information (weight, friction, motor parameters) is entered once and stored under a "module description". The operator does not have to enter this information. This method of programming means that the operator saves time and money when making product changeovers by simply retrieving a stored program. Further information on this new range can be found at

![]() With a unique patented element design and back-flush feature, the Series FN1 filter from SMC, generates no industrial waste, as there are no replaceable filter elements, thus saving you cost of filter elements, maintenance and help achieve your goal to be environmental friendly to meet ISO 14001 standard. The element of the FN1 filter is constructed of a series of grooved filter plates and wave washers placed one above the other and compressed by a compact cylinder on the top of the filter. When the element is compressed, foreign matter in the fluid is trapped in between the plates and washers. Decompressing the element allow the foreign matter to be back flushed and washed away for collection, eliminating the need for element replacement and providing a low maintenance operating regime. Recompressing continues normal operation. The process of filtration and back flushing cycle can be carried out manually or automatically. The control circuit for the cycle operation can be built using a totally pneumatic or electro pneumatic circuit, for which SMC provides the required pneumatic components. In automatic operation, a differential pressure switch indicates filter element clogging The FN1 series filter operates in tandem with the FNR reservoir, which stores the fluid required for back flushing, and FND dust recovery filter for collecting the debris. All three units are primarily constructed of stainless steel SUS304 and form an integrated circuit for industrial waste removal. The filter is compatible with water (industrial and distilled), water-soluble and oil based coolants: petroleum (Oil, kerosene and xylene) and ammonia hydroxide, sodium hydroxide and alkalis. Seal material is available as either nitrile rubber or fluoro rubber to suit the application. The filter element is available in two types, cylindrical and step type. The cylindrical type has a smooth peripheral surface, as the dimensions of the filter plate and wave washer are the same. The element is ideal for filtering fluids that contain dust with same particle size, as it provides a larger filtration area and easier dust separation. The step type element has an uneven (stepped) surface, since the dimensions of the filter plate is smaller than that of the wave washer, and is recommended for fluids containing dust particles with large variance in sizes Element lengths are either 250mm or 500mm with respective flow rates of 40 liters per minute and 80 liters per minute. (at 20-micron filtration). Compatible reservoirs have tank capacity of either 1.1 liters or 1.8 liters. Maximum operating pressure of the filter is 1.0 Mpa and maximum fluid temperature is 80ºC. For larger flow rates SMC also offers 200 liters per minute filter as a special, and also the standard filters can be mounted in parallel For more information, please visit www.smcusa.com

![]() PIAB introduces the smallest multi-stage ejector pump in the world today, the P2010! The P2010 weighs 0.54 ounces and reaches 24.9 –in Hg at only 26 psi feed pressure. This pump uses a Micro-COAX vacuum cartridge called Bi03-2. By operating at such a low air pressure, you can cut your compressed air costs by 50 percent while providing 100 percent higher vacuum flows compared with traditional single-stage ejectors on the market. With its low decibel rating of 61-64 dBA, you can use the P2010 on a tabletop robot without being bothered by the noise from the pump. The P2010 is a self-contained multi-stage ejector pump that can hang freely from its own connections or mount by using the pre-drilled holes. Your benefits include: Inline design makes possible simple and inexpensive installation. The very low weight makes it possible to place the pump quite close to the suction cup without having to reduce the speed of the “pick-and-place movement. The low feed pressure ensures high operational reliability, low air consumption and very low noise. The Micro COAX cartridge can easily be exchanged whenever needed that equates into shorter downtime.

![]() years, showcases its Vacuum Gripper System (VGS3010) at Assembly Technology Expo in Rosemont, IL. The VGS 3010 is an expansion to PIAB's COAX technology and makes for more efficient material handling in decentralized vacuum systems. The VGS 3010 features a suction cup and an efficient multi-stage air driven vacuum pump integrated in a single unit, called a "Gripper." This avoids the problems inherent to traditional vacuum systems with a centrally located vacuum pump. A traditional vacuum system installation takes into account possible pressure loss. The VGS 3010 avoids this problem of pressure loss because the pump and suction cup are integrated. The VGS 3010 can even function at operating pressures below 45 psi. This increases reliability in case of a breakdown in the air pressure network. The suction cups are made from specially developed polyurethane named DURAFLEX. These suction cups adhere to many surfaces and can grip both porous, leaky materials, such as corrugated as well as coarse and curved surfaces. The suction cups in the Vacuum Gripper System are available in sizes from 1.5" to 4.5"diameters. The Vacuum Gripper System is modularly constructed and the suction cups (with molded fittings) are easily replaceable. In case of rapid movement, transverse loads arise that can break loose suction cups. Traditional vacuum systems are often equipped with extra suction cups to compensate for this loss of vacuum, which increases system cost and energy expenditure. PIAB's new concept features an accessory called a "Stabilizer" that can be fitted around the suction cup for support during lifts. This prevents the suction cup from coming loose, thereby retaining lifting force. The "Stabilizer" also helps hard-to-handle objects with vacuum. PIAB Vacuum Products

![]() (Mooresville, NC) October 17, 2003. Hargraves Technology Corporation (Hargraves) announces the release of the EZ Mount today and becomes the first miniature pump company to offer an affordable vibration/isolation mount. As the name implies, the EZ Mount provides a versatile, low profile platform from which to secure the BTC, BTC-II, BTC-IIS, and future pump products. In addition to a top-down or bottom-up mounting option, the silicone-molded feet reduce vibration transfer and thus eliminating noise amplification. The EZ mount is available in two styles; style A is used for the BTC single and dual head pumps and style B, for accommodating the long-stack motor. Both styles possess a plastic base constructed of ABS/PC material and the silicone-molded feet that can be positioned in any one of three ninety-degree planes. The EZ Mount has a low profile; it adds just slightly more than one-half inch to the pumps height and less than 20 grams in weight. According to Doug Curtis, Engineering Manager at Hargraves, "the EZ Mount solves mounting issues arising from tight spaces in complex equipment designs. The ability to mount externally or from the top-down reduces the time and complexity of component assembly." Doug considered how engineers might apply this technology and, as a result, built as much flexibility into the mount as possible. "By allowing the silicone-molded feet to rotate on three distinct planes, the possibilities for mounting are endless." Hargraves strives to produce the best and most reliable miniature pumps in its class. The patented pump head efficiency and long life continues to distinguish the Hargraves name in the miniature diaphragm pump industry. The EZ mount literature is downloadable at http://www.hartechcorp.com/new.htm and is available for purchase on our e-commerce web site www.hartechcorp.com/store.html. Please contact Hargraves at 704-662-3500 for questions or technical assistance with the EZ Mount.

![]() Unlike conventional pneumatic spool valves that do not lend themselves to dusty, humid environments and become easily contaminated and damaged, KV’s new poppet valves have been specifically designed to operate in such aggressive conditions. Termed “The Rhino series for their durability and performance under the harshest working conditions, the Rhino is available as air or solenoid actuated with 3/2 and 5/2 versions having G1/8 and G¼” inputs, and for body porting or manifold mounting. The valves are also available with a 2 to 6 station manifold option and are supplied complete with valve mounting screws and seals. Interchangeability with another leading poppet valve on the market is an additional benefit of the new range. The Rhino’s durability and performance is achieved through its rugged metal construction and the use of a seating poppet principle which provides the valve with few moving parts resulting in the benefits of low stiction and low wear thus prolonging product life. The Rhino valve operates with a filtration level of just 100µm compared to a normal spool valve requiring a 40µm filtration level and, in keeping with the majority of other KV products, operates on unlubricated air. Typical industries that would benefit from KV’s Rhino series of valves include cement, fertilizer, flour, woodworking and ceramics, and also any process which has high dust or particles in the air supply or where the moisture level is high. ![]() Gripper From The Innovators at Techno-Sommer New Hyde Park, NY -- The new GS1015 O-ring gripper from Techno-Sommer provides more of everything needed to do the largest, heaviest o-ring placement applications. The new model has 10 expanding jaws with 12mm stroke each, providing a more uniform spread of the o-ring requiring less overall expansion to get it over the part. The ejector now has 15 mm stroke to push off o-rings. And, most important of all, the piston diameter has been increased to 75mm as compared to the 25mm on the GS65, to provide over 5 times more expansion force to expand even the toughest o-ring. Some other features of the new design make it even more suited for the toughest applications. The expander jaws travel within t-slot guides throughout their entire length of stroke to provide exceptional resistance to any side loads. The only small things about this new product are its price and size. The unit is only 100mm in diameter and the expanders travel entirely within the body diameter. For all the new and improved features that have been added to this unit, the price has also been kept small, especially compared to custom designed models. ![]() In modern automated manufacturing environments the need to maintain reliable vacuum between the cup and object under production is paramount. Developed as a fully featured vacuum management tool, SmartPump from Norgren offers the customer built in intelligence for highly reliable vacuum control. This is then combined with the efficient use of compressed air in a single robust compact package making SmartPump the smart choice for modern assembly systems. Designed for use in applications such as pick and place, packaging/handling, test and general assembly machines SmartPump offers real benefits to various industries such as the electronics, packaging, printing, medical and automotive sectors. With features such as high vacuum flow, low air consumption, intuitive programming interface, intelligent part present and automatic blow off SmartPump has been proven to make manufacturing systems faster, quieter, cleaner, more economical and smarter. With on board intelligence the SmartPump provides the user with an intuitive interface for the control of the vacuum cups. SmartPump will generate vacuum and will maintain this preset level for as long as the user needs to hold the object. The SmartPump system will only generate the vacuum it needs when it needs to. The intelligent part present facility will automatically switch off the compressed air flow once the preset levels have been achieved and will only switch back on if a system leakage is detected. With this facility the generation of compressed air is kept to a minimum thus SmartPump will help the user cut operational costs. Within traditional vacuum management systems the installation engineers will have to undertake a huge amount of complex integration. There will be the need for multiple system components such as valves, proximity switches, silencers, vacuum gauges and excess piping. The SmartPump only requires one air, vacuum and electrical connection thus installation is quick and will reduce overall system costs. The automatic blow off facility ensures that cups do not remain attached to the object once the vacuum is released. SmartPump will monitor the system for this problem and if vacuum starts to build up pressurized air will automatically be injected into the cup to destroy the vacuum. This ensures that expensive objects such as silicon wafers that can cost up to $20,000 are not handled incorrectly. www.norgren.com

![]() New from KV is the "Ultraline" range of pneumatic Rodless cylinders, offering a wide variety of user friendly options and configurations. With rodless cylinders now becoming widely accepted as a competitive advantage and offering space saving benefits over standard pneumatic cylinders, the new "Ultraline" rodless program incorporates several innovative and user driven features including smooth slow speed operation, very low leak rates, minimal breakout pressure, extended cushioning, flexible port options and compactness. Working in conjunction with a major seal manufacturer and by utilizing hybrid seal technologies, KV have been able to develop a unique sealing system which provides low leak rates and minimal breakout pressures, which when combined together, are often impossible to achieve due to the open construction of the cylinder barrel. In addition, the minimal breakout pressure provides an ultra-smooth linear movement making it ideal for spraying or synchronized transitioning with controllable operating speeds as low as 2mm/sec. Finally, KV have designed flexible porting as standard, which allows customers the benefits of single porting from one end or porting from either end. In conjunction, where space is limited, KV have developed a range of compact rodless cylinders, which are currently the shortest cylinders on the market. "Availability has not been overlooked" advises KVs project director - Andrew Hough. "The current design and assembly allows for a standard 5 day delivery and we fully expect to be able to offer a 24hr turnaround in the very near future" Cost is also a key feature of the new Ultraline range, and due to its simplistic assembly technique, KV have been able to minimize costs with real cost savings being passed onto customers. Finally to complement the introduction of the new Ultraline range, KV have also produced an easy to use rodless configurator, which is available as a stand-alone CD or usable on-line, which also incorporates 2D & 3D drawings for all models. ![]() Beyond its compatibility with NFPA standards, as it pertains to pneumatic cylinder mounting, bore and rod sizes, accessory dimensions and compressed air fitting port sizes, Festo's DNA series double-acting cylinder employs the latest in aluminum profile extrusion technology and innovative design. Features, such as its extruded, grooved (for sensor mounting), high-strength barrel profile is at the foundation of the DNA's unique design. The profile provides not only a precise bore and highly efficient housing, but it also facilitates the use of precision machined aluminum end and head caps that do not require connecting rods to form an reliable air-tight seal. These components are affixed directly to the profile with slim collar screws, which have been especially fabricated with internal threads (at the head) to receive screws for various NFPA mounting configurations as described NFPA T3.6.7.R2-1996. The sensor grooves in the cylinder profile facilitate the application of either of Festo's space savings SME-8 or SMT-8 sensor types. They are easily installed without brackets or cylinder disassembly of any kind. Internally the DNA exhibits some characteristics that go beyond the requirements of the NFPA standard, and offer the user several advantages. The piston rod is burnished to provide superior resistance to corrosion as compared to the typical chrome plated rod found in other NFPA cylinders. The piston assembly is specifically designed to accommodate the full stroke range for a given configuration, while also allowing both the air connection port and air cushioning adjustment screw to be mounted in close proximity to each other and on the same surface of the cylinder. This feature reduces the machine designer's burden with respect to machine maintenance. Rod accessories are fabricated from carbon steel with a black oxide finish and can withstand the environmental conditions of applications where NFPA standards apply. Festo offers the required piston rod diameters of 5/8- or 1-inch for barrel diameters of 1-1/2, 2 and 2-1/2, and 1- or 1-3/8-inch rods for barrel diameters 3-1/4, 4 and 5 inches. Festo Corporation, a world leader in design and development of pneumatic solutions for automation processes, has announced the introduction of the CRHD Linear Actuator Series for hygienic environments. The latest addition to the Company's extensive selection of stainless steel actuators, Type CRHD offers all the environmental features that brought prominence to earlier models aimed at the chemical and food-processing environments. Type CRHD, however, breaks new ground with respect to conformity with the needs of hygienic applications in pharmaceutical and medical processes. Prior to the introduction of
CRHD actuators, the CR Series serviced aggressive environments,
where acids, bases, highly aggressive media and cleaners
challenged the integrity of the stainless steel actuators. The new
stainless steel CRHD design meets and exceeds these capabilities,
and in addition, offers unmatched compatibility with sterile
operating environments due to its inherently streamline
(cylindrical) shape, and integral mounting component on the rear
cap. There are no corners or debris collection points on the
exterior surface, so efficient "drain-off" of fluids is
assured during cleaning activities. The units are tested for
compatibility with harsh environments, including hot/cold aging at
temperatures ranging between +120°C to The product range includes bore sizes between 32 to 100mm, and stroke ranges from 10 to 500mm. CRHD units can be ordered with either a polyurethane (PU) or viton wiper seal for compatibility with a wide range of applications. High temperature operations (up to +150°C) are supported by a FKM wiper seals option. Two different bearing caps and three different rear-end caps are used to derive mounting configurations that include, threaded holes in the rear cap and a specially designed (hygienic) thread collar and shoulder on the bearing cap; clevis attachment in rear cap, and a lug attachment on the rear cap. The piston rod ends are fashioned with thread and nut, and options for either a clevis or rod eye are available. Festo's hygienic design concept make the most of clean-in-place (CIP) and sterilize-in-place (SIP) requirements of medical and pharmaceutical applications, because the CRHD series features minimal gaps in the assembly and peak-to-valley variations in the external surfaces between 0.5 to 0.6 microns. Regardless of the application, CRHD cylinder characteristics complement not only extended requirements of hygienic environments, but they also support all of the demands for cleanliness and resistance to harsh environments present in food processing and packaging, and chemical processing. 395 Moreland Road

The introduction of the new IDN Interface Module has simplified using DeviceNet communications for controlling low-density manifold configurations (up to 8 solenoid coils). Not unlike the "full-blown" predecessors of the IDN, namely the F11 on manifold types 03 and 04, which were made famous for reducing the time, labor and costs involved in bringing pneumatic systems on line, the IDN fills a void created by a need to network Midi/Maxi and ISO 5599II valves in smaller and less intense remote terminals, absent the inputs found in the larger units. IDN-controlled manifolds are also totally modular, and support plug-in valves, sub bases, flow controls, pressure regulators and DeviceNet adapter. They offer IP-65 protection and CE compliance, and they can be made compatible with E-Stops via an auxiliary power connector. These low-density configurations are also flexible in accepting a mixture of single and double-solenoid 5/2- and 5/3-way valves. 395 Moreland Road

One of the outstanding features
of these new units, which are expected to replace virtually all
first generation short stroke units from the AV Series, AVL and
ADV Series, is the highly efficient, "one-piece" design,
which results in as much as 33% space savings over typical ISO
6431 cylinders for a given stroke length. Fabricated from aluminum
profiles and equipped with sensor mounting grooves (above 4 mm
bore size), the cylinders are designed to provide sufficient
overlap with respect to stroke range and dynamic capability to
afford the user the highest degree of force generation capacity to
relative stroke and dimensional size. The six models (32- through
100-mm rod diameter) are VDMA 24562 compliant, while smaller units
are equipped with through-holes for mounting. These
characteristics position the Festo's AVEC and ADVC "short
stroke" units ahead of their closest competition, since they
exhibit uniform advanced design via second generation
sophistication, compatibility with a single integral
groove-mounted sensor, and worldwide availability. 395 Moreland Road

The emphasis on this new range of vacuum pumps using the COAX( technology, the P3010 Series, is on modularity and efficiency. The core of the system is a compressed air-driven vacuum pump module. This patented design expands the compressed air in several stages in a straight-through manner. This allows for greater amounts of vacuum flow while consuming less compressed air than conventional pumps. The pump module is clipped onto a "click-in" strip that can handle up to four pumps, without tools. There are a number of pump accessories, all very easy to attach. These include connector modules for either three or six possible vacuum connections, vacuum switches, quick-release modules that provide a "puff" of air to blow off parts for faster work cycles. There are also extra pump modules to increase performance. The pumps are designed to be easy to maintain and simple to install. They are 0.65" wide and weigh about 3 ounces. They can create a vacuum pressure as low as 27 -inHg at 45-psi inlet pressure. The pump has no moving parts that means the noise level can be held down to 66 d(B)A. There is no need for lubrication and there is no risk of static build-up or sparks. PIAB Vacuum Products

NGT's new line of pneumatic dual checks are designed to lock bubble tight, in the event of a pressure loss. Dual checks help control cylinder travel by locking air on both sides of the cylinder when the valve is closed. No pilot lines are required. The balanced poppet reduces the force required to open and close the valve and eliminates wear due to impact. Two air cushions at either end of the spool also help to reduce impact forces. The valve body is hardcoat anodized for wear and corrosion resistance. The internal components are aluminum and stainless steel. The manual release allows the operator to internally release trapped pressure without opening a line. Sizes range from 1/8 to 1/2 NPTF. Flow coefficients (Cv) range from 1.5 to 4.
